Amsterdam, 945. Minor artist and gallery owner Han van Meegeren stands accused of selling a previously unknown painting by Dutch master Johannes Vermeer to none other than Hermann Goering. In his defence, van Meegeren claims that the work was a forgery intended to con the Nazi leader. Art historian and former resistance fighter Captain Geert Piller has been brought in to investigate. To save his life, van Meegeren must paint another flawless Vermeer.This penetrating new play explores art, forgery and war crimes as well as desire, forgiveness and redemption. Playwright Kate Cayley first thought to write the play after reading this New Yorker article on the real-life Han van Meegeren Directed by Tarragon’s Artistic Director Richard Rose, The Bakelite Masterpiece stars two award-winning, powerhouse actors: Geordie Johnson (Dora Award for Tarragon’s I Am Yours, 11 seasons at Stratford Festival) and Irene Poole (Dora Awards for Tarragon’s The Little Years, Birdland Theatre’s The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and Factory Theatre’s The Leisure Society). Tarragon Theatre playwright-in-residence Kate Cayley is an award-winning playwright, poet and fiction writer. Her previous play at Tarragon, After Akhmatova earned her a nomination for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. She is the artistic director of Stranger Theatre and the co-artistic download moviebox director of The Cooking Fire Theatre Festival. Her poetry was shortlisted for the CBC Literary Award for Poetry, and her first short story collection, How You Were Born, was just launched on October 17.Tarragon Theatre’s Artistic Director Richard Rose is well known for developing new work, including four plays that won the Governor General’s Award and nine other nominated plays. He is a four-time Dora Award winner for direction and production and has had numerous nominations.
